What to bring to your tax preparation appointment…

When we prepare a tax return for you, we like to be as thorough as possible, while being efficient with your time. Therefore, we have put together a checklist of things to bring to your tax appointment.

When you come for your appointment, please bring the following (for all that apply to you):

  • Identification: Driver’s license or other government-issued identification for you and your spouse, social security card for you and your family members (for new clients or new family members), dates of birth for family members (for new clients or new family members), PIN letter if you have had an identity theft issue or ordered a PIN from the IRS.
  • Prior year tax return(s) (for new clients)
  • Completed Tax Questionnaire
  • Income: Forms W-2’s, 1099’s, K-1’s, Social Security statements, unemployment compensation, gambling, rental income, business income and/or any documents showing income earned during the tax year
  • Education: Documents showing tuition, payments from 529 plans, school expenses paid, scholarships received, or student loan interest paid including 1098-T and 1099-Q
  • Deductions: Documents or information showing expense paid for medical expenses, mortgage interest, real estate taxes, sales tax on major purchases (e.g. vehicles), cash and non-cash charitable donations, safe deposit boxes, tax preparation fees, gambling losses, energy efficient improvements, theft and casualty losses, employee business expenses and investment expenses
  • Rental Property/Business Expenses: Documentation for expenses incurred in the renting of real estate or the operation of businesses, including a full back-up of QuickBooks if you maintain your accounting on this program.
  • Health Care: documents showing your health care coverage for the year and HSA forms showing contributions and payments
  • Earned Income Credit: Proof of children’s residency with you, such as school records, health care provider statements, child care provider records, etc.
